Washington Pediatrics Weight Reduction Clinic focuses on the treatment of overweight children and providing options for patients who are at risk for becoming overweight, helping to treat and prevent.

Diabetes, hypertension and other obesity-related chronic diseases that are prevalent among adults have now become more common in children. The percentage of children and adolescents who are overweight and obese is now higher that ever before. Poor dietary habits and inactivity are reported to contribute to the increase of obesity in youth.

Are you concerned with your child's weight and overall health?
Washington Pediatrics wants to prevent overweight problems by helping your child achieve a healthy weight. We provide a Weight Reduction Clinic in our office that is covered by most insurance plans, including Medicaid.

What does being overweight mean?
Over the past 30 years, a growing number of children and teenagers have developed weight problems. Today, 9 million kids ages 6 to 19 are overweight. Your child is classified as being at-risk for overweight or overweight based on their Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation. BMI is a calculation that uses height and weight to estimate how much body fat you have. Too much body fat is a problem because it can lead to illnesses and other health problems. BMI, although not a perfect method for judging someone's weight, is often a good way to check on how a kid is growing. Being overweight puts your child at risk for severe medical problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, social isolation, and even knee or hip disease requiring major surgery.

Program Overview
The initial appointment will be an office visit in which the patient is seen by a pediatrician and the AccessCare Case Manager for a complete history and physical exam with special emphasis on obesity-related problems and situations. At this time, we will discuss your child's daily food intake and physical activity pattern. Both health care providers will work together and determine what the patient can begin immediately changing in their lifestyle to make positive change suitable to your individual child's needs - a personalized exercise prescription. We will develop a weight loss or weight maintenance program to meet the individual needs of your child.

Follow up office visits will be scheduled to check the patient's progress and provide further insight to help your child.

Dance Aerobics
In addition to your child's personalized exercise prescription which incorporates all aspects of living a healthy lifestyle, Dance Aerobics is a fun and exciting way to get exercise and make new friends.

Classes are offered by a certified aerobics instructor on Wednesdays at 3:15 at the Boys and Girls Club on Bridge Street in Washington.

Weight Reduction Clinic is a great opportunity to help your child lose weight safely, learn to enjoy a healthier lifestyle, and improve their self-esteem and motivation.
